As explained by ScienceDirect in their article “Powder Coating”, powder coating is a surface finishing process that starts with electrostatically charging a powder, which is then sprayed onto a prepared substrate. The coated part is baked in an oven, where the powder melts and forms a continuous, protective film.
Unlike traditional painting, powder coating does not require a solvent and results in a harder, more wear-resistant finish. There are two types of powders commonly used: thermoplastic and thermosetting. Thermoplastic powders can be reheated and melted again, while thermosetting powders form irreversible chemical bonds during the curing process, giving them enhanced durability and resistance properties.
