Powder Coating 101: 7 Things to Know

As published by Architectural Digest in “What Is Powder Coating? 7 Things to Know,” Lindsey Mather and Katherine McLaughlin explain powder coating as a dry finishing method for metal, applied electrostatically and then cured with heat (or UV) to create a hard, even finish.

Powder coating is positioned as a strong alternative to spray paint when durability and a uniform finish matter, with the heat-cured coating described as thicker and more resistant to nicks and wear, especially for outdoor metal items. Prep is treated as non-negotiable, typically involving thorough cleaning with a degreaser (and sometimes additional pretreatment), plus masking any areas that should not be coated.
