How Powder Coating Improves Durability

As explained by the Powder Coating Institute in their article “What is Powder Coating?”, powder coating is a dry finishing process that has grown to represent more than 15% of the industrial finishing market. Since its rise in popularity in North America during the 1960s, this method has become a go-to solution for manufacturers seeking high-performance, durable finishes.

Powder coating works by electrostatically charging a fine powder made from polymer resins, pigments, curatives, and additives. The charged particles are sprayed onto grounded metal parts, then cured in an oven, where heat activates a chemical reaction that forms highly durable, cross-linked molecular bonds. This process creates coatings that are not only aesthetically pleasing—with endless color and texture possibilities—but also incredibly resistant to corrosion, impact, and wear.
