Laser cutting is an expertise that uses a laser to cut materials, and is normally used for industrial manufacturing applications. A typical commercial laser for cutting materials would involve a motion control system to follow a CNC or G-code of the pattern to be cut onto the material. Industrial laser cutters are used to cut flat-sheet material as well as structural and piping materials. Laser cutting is mainly done in custom plastic parts, but it can also applicable in custom wood, foam parts and rubber as well as thin custom metal parts.

Capabilities of custom laser cutting

  • In custom laser cutting it is possible to cut up to 1/2″ acrylic or wood comfortably, and up to 1 inch acrylic or wood under special conditions.
  • With custom laser cutting it is possible to create custom, two-dimensional plastic parts suitable for variety of projects.
  • Cutting of stainless steel and spring steel up to 0.060 inch is possible.
  • Cutting of very thin materials including 0.003 inch Mylar sheets is also done.
  • It can cut even raster engrave and vector engrave parts up to 47.5 inch by 47.5 inch easily.
  • It cuts holes as little as the laser beams widths around 0.01 incheswith ease.
  • It can cut any parts for desired shape based on a sketch
  • It is possible to laser cut almost any drawings including smooth curves, sharp angles, small screw holes, and complex lace designs.
  • Most significantly it can cut just one part or thousands of parts and anything in between as per client’s requirements.

Limitations of custom laser cutting

  • In laser cutting small circles (generally for screw holes) will not be perfectly circular. Again the holes may be conical due to the minor taper of the laser cut.
  • Sharp and thin pieces which taper to a needle-sharp point might deform from the laser’s heat or crack down when taken out of the scrap.
  • Plastic thickness can vary up to 10% (+/-), so it is not possible to count the thickness to be exact when designing the parts.
  • The material sits on a metal grid all throughthe cutting, so when the laser cuts through the material, hits the metal grill and bounces back and again hits the bottom of the material, as a result causing a little dent or mark.

At Architectural & Industrial Metal Finishing Company, LLC, our custom laser cutting services offer customers a fast and efficient way to obtain precision cut metal shapes and blanks. Our 3-axis CO2 flying optics laser cutting system has a maximum power output of 2500 W. We can process hot rolled and cold rolled steel, aluminum and stainless steel up to 120” x 60”, in thicknesses up to 0.75”, with an accuracy of .004”. Laser cutting is an ideal solution for economically cutting custom shapes out of sheet and plate without the need for expensive tooling.

Turnaround time is very fast, often 2 or 3 days, and we are equally capable of handling small and large volume production runs. JIT shipping services are also available as a value added service to customers.
